This plan calls for the redevelopment of several city blocks surrounding the Cathedral of the Holy Cross located in Boston’s South End. The scope includes the urban design and programming of a multi-facility complex of educational, administrative, residential, and church-related activities. AD+A, Inc. devised the programming for the site, prepared a master plan, and developed urban design concepts for the study area.
D+A, Inc. incorporated design concepts to reorganize vehicular traffic by reducing the number of roadways traversing the site without impacting through traffic. The scheme defined formal public spaces such as landscaped plazas, gardens, and pathways. The plan respects the architectural integrity of the cathedral while providing for the development of new church-related facilities that enhance the neighborhood context. Over 400 residential units are provided through elderly housing, townhouses, etc.
